Born with numerous birth defects caused by radiation from the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster, the 32-year-old was abandoned by her parents shortly after birth. Eventually adopted by an American university professor, Masters says her mom "saved me from Ukraine, and she saved me by introducing the world of sports." Masters, who had both legs amputated, has since transformed herself into a multisport athlete, a 10-time Paralympian medalist and is now going for gold in seven events at the Games in Beijing: "I want that young girl, whether she's in the hospital going through her amputation and has no idea what is to come and what's possible, or someone that acquired a new disability, or to know that so many opportunities are out there."
